What are the options for using AVAX with Metamask? In this tutorial, a step-by-step approach for all possibilities Metamask has to offer!
Contents show
Being launched in 2024, the Avalanche crypto project is one of the youngest and most successful ones being around. Moreover, in less than 2 years this crypto project managed to grow exponentially. It all started with an initial investment of $230 million and at the time of writing this blockchain project is valued at $25 billion(!).
Particularly, Avalanche(AVAX) is a brand new blockchain network being fast, censorship-resistant, secure, and easy to scale up. In other words, it uses a decentralized network as a foundation to launch various finance projects(DeFi).
Decentralized finance(DeFi) is one of the major innovations of blockchain technology and can be explained as follows:
‘DeFi is short for Decentralized Finance an umbrella term for a variety of financial applications in cryptocurrency or blockchain geared toward disrupting financial intermediaries.
In other words, it’s a blockchain technology that offers solutions in finance(trading, lending, or borrowing) without the need of any intermediary like traditional banks’
In order to join DeFi projects like decentralized exchanges, DAPPs, or even blockchain games users need a crypto wallet to use them. Additionally, there is Metamask a very popular decentralized crypto wallet designed for this purpose.
In this guide, I’ll explain the three different options you have to use AVAX with Metamask and what the necessary steps are.
What is AVAX token?
Before diving into the different options for using AVAX with Metamask first some necessary education about the Avalanche token. AVAX is the native currency of the Avalanche blockchain network. And can be used as a value of transfer within the Avalanche ecosystem.
In fact, the Avalanche project is designed to challenge Ethereum which is famous for its problems with scalability and high transactions fees. On top of that, Avalanche is built to be Ethereum-compatible. Therefore the Avax token can be easily converted to be used on the Ethereum blockchain.
However, to put things in perspective AVAX isn’t an ERC-20 token like many other coins out there. Meaning, AVAX can’t be used on the Ethereum blockchain or sent to Metamask directly using Ethereum Mainnet.
What is Metamask Crypto Wallet?
Initially, Metamask started as an extension in the Chrome browser that you can easily install(and still is). Recently, at the end of 2024, the developers added downloadable versions for mobile phones as well(Android and IOS).
Basically, Metamask is a wallet that is primarily available on the Ethereum blockchain. In particular, it allows users to store and manage account keys, broadcast transactions and send and receive Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies and tokens and doesn’t differ much from a regular crypto wallet.
However, because Metamask started out to be Ethereum-compatible it only allows you to connect to decentralized applications on the Ethereum blockchain. Nowadays, Metamask also allows you to add different blockchain networks like Binance BSC, Polygon, or Avalanche.
How To Add Avalanche Network To Metamask?
Remember, Metamask initially started out as a crypto wallet for the Ethereum blockchain. In addition, to start to use AVAX with Metamask you should add the Avalanche network into the wallet.
And this is what I’m going to explain here in some very simple steps.
- Login to Metamask and click on ‘Ethereum Mainnet‘ to add networks
- Click on ‘Add Network‘ and enter the following values:
- Network name: Avalanche Network
- Chain ID: 0xa86a
- Symbol: AVAX
- New RPC URL: https://api.avax.network/ext/bc/C/rpc
- Explorer: https://cchain.explorer.avax.network/
- Click ‘Save‘

All in all, if done right you have added the Avalanche C-Chain to Metamask which functions as the starting point for the rest of this tutorial.
Three Ways to Use AVAX with Metamask
In general, Metamask is the most popular decentralized crypto wallet that can be used to store cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Also, it’s possible to buy, sell, or swap crypto tokens and connect to several blockchain networks.
Consequently, in the section above you managed to add the ‘Avalanche Network‘ to the Metamask wallet. Therefore, to start using AVAX with Metamask you can do it in three ways. These are:
- Deposit AVAX with Metamask
- Buy AVAX with Transak
- Send AVAX from Metamask to crypto exchange
1. Deposit Avax with Metamask
Suppose you already have some crypto tokens in your Metamask wallet. On top of that, you don’t want to start using another wallet just because it’s on another blockchain network. The main reason for this is the additional administration required for storing the seed phrases and private keys.
By allowing you to add several blockchain networks into the Metamask wallet you have all your funds in a central place. Moreover, this is a very powerful way to keep track of all your crypto-related investments.
Deposit AVAX into Metamask From Any Crypto Exchange
To walk you through the entire process of getting some AVAX into Metamask I think it’s smart to start at a centralized cryptocurrency exchange first. In this tutorial, I will use Binance because it’s the cheapest(in trading fees) and a reliable option. Create a free account at Binance here.
Of course, if you favor another exchange then Binance isn’t mandatory. In addition, other good alternatives are Coinbase, Kucoin, Okex, or FTX.
Also, I’m not going into detail on how to buy AVAX on Binance. Therefore, I assume you know how trading engines work there. If not, read our trading guide for beginners at Binance first.
Below are the steps you must take to withdraw AVAX to Metamask from Binance:
- In Metamask copy your AVAX account to the clipboard
- Go to your Binance wallet and click ‘Withdraw‘
- Choose coin AVAX Avalanche
- Paste your AVAX address from the clipboard into the Address field
- Make sure to choose AVAXC (Avalanche C-Chain) as the network
- Give the amount to withdraw and click ‘Withdraw‘ button

To finalize the withdrawal, proceed to confirm the e-mail that has been sent to your inbox. If everything went ok you will receive AVAX tokens in your Metamask wallet within minutes(seconds).
2. Buy AVAX with Transak
Buying AVAX on Metamask is supported by Transak and is an integration solution for fiat-to-crypto payment. Additionally, Transak accepts credit card payments as well as bank transfers. Transak is available in more than 100 countries with over 60 local currencies.
The big benefit of using Transak for buying crypto in Metamask is the ease of use and speed. However, buying AVAX this way requires KYC identification and can be costly; a $5 flat fee for every transaction.
Steps to buy AVAX with Transak:
- In Metamask select the Avalanche Network account
- Click on ‘Buy‘ button and then ‘Continue to Transak‘
- A new browser tab opens the Transak website. Enter the amount, select payment type, and click ‘Buy now‘
- Next, you need to process KYC. This can be done by uploading 1 of these 6 types of documents:
- Bank statement
- Payslip
- Utility bill
- Passport
- Driving Licence
- National Identity Card
- To finalize this KYC you need to make a selfie and the transaction will be finalized.
Finally, it depends on what type of payment you chose. Credit card payments are almost instantly but bank transfers can take up to 3 business days.

3. Send AVAX from Metamask to Crypto Exchange
Also, when using AVAX with Metamask crypto wallet you might want to send the AVAX tokens away. For instance, Metamask isn’t directly connected to an external bank account, and to cash out crypto for money you need to send them away.
How to send AVAX from Metamask to crypto exchange? Luckily, this process is very easy and similar to the withdrawal crypto process centralized exchanges are using. Again, in this tutorial, I will use Binance as an example, but it can be any crypto exchange of your choice.
Steps to send AVAX from Metamask to Binance:
- In Binance go to ‘Wallet‘ and then click ‘Deposit‘
- Choose ‘Crypto deposit‘ from the popup window
- Now fill in AVAX for coin and make sure that you choose AVAX C-CHAIN as the network.
- Copy the AVAX address to your clipboard
- Go to Metamask and click ‘Send‘ button
- Paste AVAX address from the clipboard
- Click ‘Next‘ button and finalize the transaction
As the Avalanche blockchain can process transactions really fast it is just a matter of seconds waiting before funds arrive within Binance 🙂
… That’s it! Now you know all the important facets of using AVAX with Metamask and are ready to enter the exciting world of crypto and NFT trading. Take care!
